Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum) is a large tropical hardwood tree native to Africa, prized for its beautiful reddish-brown wood and fine grain. It belongs to the same botanical family as mahogany and is often marketed as “African mahogany.”
Habitat and Range
Native range: Tropical Africa — from Sierra Leone and Nigeria across the Congo Basin to Uganda and Tanzania
Preferred habitat: Lowland and upland rainforests; thrives in moist, well-drained soils
Elevation: Usually below 1,200 meters
Wood Characteristics and Uses
Colour:
Pinkish when freshly cut, maturing to deep reddish-brown or mahogany color
Grain:
Interlocked, producing striking ribbon-like figure on quarter-sawn surfaces
Can display wavy, mottled, or “pommel” figuring
Texture: Fine and even
Durability: Moderately durable; resistant to termites but somewhat prone to insect attack if untreated
Density: Medium to heavy (about 640 kg/m³ when dried)
Workability: Machines and finishes well; often used as a substitute for true mahogany
