Specification / Key Properties to Check
When specifying oak decking, keep in mind the following:
- Thickness & width: Typical board dimensions are ~22 mm thick × widths of ~95mm, 120mm, 145mm. For example, one vendor lists 22mm × 145mm.
- Moisture content / drying: It’s important that the boards are kiln- or air-dried so the moisture content is appropriate for outdoor use to minimise movement (shrinkage, warping). For example, oak decking from one supplier: “moisture content of 16-20%”.
- Durability class: According to durability classifications (EN350-2) oak is often “Durable” (Class 2) for above-ground use. One spec: “Durability EN350-2: Durable. Class 2” for their oak decking.
- Density / strength: Oak is dense; one spec gives density ~670-760 kg/m³ for their oak decking boards.
- Fixings / metal compatibility: Oak contains tannins/extractives which can corrode ferrous fixings or stain nearby materials.
- Movement / shrinkage: Because timber moves with moisture/season, spacing and installation details matter. Installation guidance for timber decking (general) recommends board spacing ~5-8mm, install timber with moisture content less than 20%.
Benefits of Oak Decking
Choosing oak decking brings several advantages:
- Durability and longevity: As a hardwood oak, it is more wear-resistant, more robust under foot traffic and more durable outdoors compared to many softwoods.
- Aesthetic quality: Oak features warm golden-brown tones, prominent and attractive grain, and weathers to a silvery grey if left untreated — which many find attractive.
- Premium finish / value uplift: Because it’s a high-quality hardwood, oak decking can enhance appearance and may add value to outdoor area.
- Natural material / sustainability potential: If sourced well (FSC/PEFC certified and from well-managed forests) oak is a renewable natural product. Many UK suppliers market UK/EU sourced oak.
