Iroko (Milicia excelsa) — often called African teak — is a large tropical hardwood tree native to Africa. Although not related to true teak (Tectona grandis), it shares similar durability and appearance, making it a valuable timber species across the world.
Wood:
Color: Yellow when freshly cut, darkening to rich golden-brown or medium brown with age
Grain: Interlocked, with a moderately coarse texture
Density: Hard, heavy, and durable — resistant to rot, termites, and marine borers
Uses: Furniture, flooring, joinery, shipbuilding, veneers, and outdoor construction (often used as a teak substitute)
Cultural and local significance:
Considered sacred in many African communities; often associated with ancestral spirits
Used traditionally for carving, drums, and ceremonial structures
