Fresh sawn oak refers to oak timber that is newly cut from the log and has not been dried — either naturally (air-dried) or artificially (kiln-dried).

It typically has a high moisture content of 40–80%, depending on when and how the tree was felled and milled. Because it is cut green, it’s easier to work and shape — a key reason it’s used in traditional timber framing.

Characteristics

Property Fresh Sawn Oak
Moisture Content 40–80% (very wet)
Weight Very heavy due to water content
Workability Easy to cut and shape while wet
Shrinkage Significant as it dries — may twist, check, or split
Colour Pale golden when cut, darkens to honey or silver-grey as it ages
Smell Strong, tannic, and distinctive (some describe as “vinegar-like”)

Advantages

Ease of Working:
When freshly sawn, oak is relatively soft — much easier to saw, mortise, and chisel than when dry.

Structural Strength:
Becomes extremely strong and hard as it dries in situ; used for centuries in traditional oak framing.

Natural Durability:
High tannin content gives good resistance to decay, fungi, and insects — especially heartwood of European oak (Quercus robur or Quercus petraea).

Cost-Effective:
Usually cheaper than air-dried or kiln-dried oak because it doesn’t require years of storage.

Sustainability:
Locally sourced, renewable, and biodegradable — a highly sustainable choice when responsibly harvested.

Green Oak Timber

Welcome to Coyle Timber, your trusted source for premium Green Oak Timber. Known for its strength, durability, and natural beauty, green oak is a highly sought-after material in construction, joinery, and outdoor projects. Whether you’re looking to build a traditional oak-framed structure, enhance your garden with custom landscaping features, or embark on a restoration project, green oak timber provides a timeless, rustic charm that stands the test of time.

Why Choose Green Oak Timber?

Green oak is a freshly cut, untreated wood, retaining its natural moisture, which makes it more flexible and easier to work with than seasoned oak. As the timber gradually dries, it hardens and strengthens, making it perfect for:

  • Timber Frame Buildings**: Strong, adaptable, and stunning in appearance.
  • Outdoor Structures**: Pergolas, decking, garden furniture, and fencing.
  • Joinery Projects**: Windows, doors, and other structural features.

Key Benefits:

  • Sustainability: Green oak is a renewable resource, with responsible sourcing practices.
  • Durability: Over time, it hardens, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Its natural grain, knots, and aging process give a rustic, warm character to any project.
  • Versatility: Ideal for both traditional and contemporary designs.

Our Products:

  • Beams: Large structural beams for building projects.
  • Posts: Perfect for outdoor structures and fencing.
  • Boards: Ideal for cladding, flooring, and decking.
  • Custom Sizes: Cut to your specific requirements for any project.
