8 linear metres per m2
Key Features & Benefits
Here are salient features of British cedar cladding:
- Natural durability: It’s rated as EN 350-2 Durability Class 3 (Moderately Durable) for heartwood when used externally (occasionally wet).
- Low density / easy to work with: Densities around 330-390 kg/m³ for British cedar.
- Stability / movement: The movement class is small — it is relatively stable compared to many softwoods.
- Aesthetic appeal: Pale pink to amber heartwood, frequent dark knots, gives a warm, characterful look. Over time, untreated, it weathers to a silver-grey patina.
- Low carbon / local sourcing: Being grown in the UK reduces transport footprint; suppliers emphasise its sustainability credentials.
- Workability: Easy to cut, fix and finish; takes fixings reasonably well (but see fixings section).
Uses & Applications
This type of cladding is very suitable for:
- External cladding of houses, extensions, garden rooms and outbuildings.
- Vertical or horizontal board orientations, feather-edge, tongue & groove (T&G), shiplap profiles. Example profiles: feather-edge 22mm→8mm taper.
- Interior feature walls as well (though more common external).
- Where a durable, hardwood look is desired with moderate maintenance.
